What is Dynamic URL Tagging?
Dynamic URL Tagging automatically records which campaign and source brought a candidate to your platform. When a candidate registers or logs in through a tagged link, that information can be saved directly to their profile, no manual data entry required.
Why this is useful?
- See what's actually working. Tag links in job ads, email campaigns, or social posts, and instantly see which channels bring in real registrations, not just clicks.
- Spend smarter. Once you can trace candidates back to a specific source, you can shift budget toward what performs and cut spend on channels that don't convert.
- Cleaner reporting. Untracked traffic often gets bucketed as "direct" or "unknown" in analytics, which quietly skews your data. Tagged links remove that ambiguity.
What it does?
When a link contains campaign and source information and a candidate uses it to register or log in, the platform reads that information and saves it to two fields on the candidate's profile:
- Campaign: which campaign or push the candidate came through (e.g., a specific email send or ad push)
- Source: which channel brought them in (e.g., email, a specific job board, a newsletter)
When a candidate clicks that link and successfully registers or logs in, the platform reads that information and saves it straight to their profile. It only checks for this information on registration and login pages, at the exact moment someone uses the link, it doesn't track candidates as they browse the rest of the site.
Enabling the feature
Dynamic URL Tagging is an optional module and must be installed by the Jobiqo Team first. Once installed, site administrators can turn it on or off from: /admin/jobiqo/utm-tagging/settings.
If the feature is enabled, registration and login work exactly as before but campaign and source data is mapped and added to candidate profiles.
Before you start: set up your campaign and source taxonomy
Before any tagging can work, your campaigns and sources need to exist as terms in the system first. Those lists work as any other taxonomy fields in your backend and ensure that a tagged link can only be matched if the value in the link matches an existing term in your taxonomy.
If a link uses a campaign or source name that isn't on the list, the platform just ignores that part and moves on. So it's worth setting up your lists before you start sharing tagged links.
By default, campaign values are saved to the candidate's Campaign profile field, and source values are saved to the candidate's Source profile field.
Building a tagged URL
A tagged link is just a normal registration or login link with two extra pieces added to the end:
| Parameter | What it identifies |
utm_campaign | The campaign associated with the candidate's journey |
utm_source | The channel that brought the candidate to the platform |
Campaign template:?utm_campaign={CAMPAIGN_TERM}&utm_source={SOURCE_TERM}
Replace the placeholder values with the actual campaign and source terms you want to include. If a value contains spaces or special characters, it must be URL-encoded, for example, "Spring Campaign" becomes ?utm_campaign=Spring%20Campaign
Registration example:yoursite.com/user/register/applicant?utm_campaign=SpringCampaign&utm_source=Email
Login example:yoursite.com/user/login?utm_campaign=ReturningCandidates&utm_source=Newsletter
Two ways to write the same value
You can refer to a campaign or source either by its full name or by a shorter alias, if one has been set up for it. Both point to the same thing. For example, if a source called "Jobiqo Newsletter" has the alias jobiqo_source1, these two links do exactly the same thing:
?utm_source=Jobiqo%20Newsletter
?utm_source=jobiqo_source1
Campaign values are only ever checked against your campaign terms, and source values only against your source terms in the taxonomy.
Tagging a link with more than one value
You can tag a single link with multiple campaigns or sources at once, separated by commas:
/user/register/applicant?utm_campaign=Campaign1,Campaign2&utm_source=Email,Partner
Each value is checked on its own, and every one that matches gets added to the candidate's profile.
What happens if a value doesn't match anything
If part of a tagged link doesn't match anything on your campaign or source terms:
- Nothing breaks, and no new entry is created automatically.
- That specific value is simply skipped.
- The candidate can still register or log in as normal.
- Any other values in the same link that do match are still applied.
For example, if in ?utm_source=Email,UnknownSource "Email" is on your list but "UnknownSource" isn't, only "Email" gets saved in the source field the other value is skipped.
Existing profile information is always safe
This feature only ever adds information, it never overwrites or removes anything already on a candidate's profile. If a candidate already has a campaign or source saved, and a matching value comes in again, it's simply not duplicated. This is true whether it's someone's first time registering or an existing candidate logging back in through a tagged link.
